Andre Cronje Releases Rival to OpenSea

Andre Cronje, the creator of Yearn.Finance, has released a new NFT marketplace, Artion. It is currently in the beta version of the Fantom blockchain. Reviews have compared it to OpenSea.

The news comes after OpenSea took a blow the previous week as one of its employees, Nate Chastain, was accused of insider trading.

But Artion, unlike OpenSea’s 2.5% commission, doesn’t take any. The plans are for it to support the same ERC-721 tokens like the ones on OpenSea – with the main difference being that it costs only 1 FTM ($1.3) to mint an NFT while doing so costs hundreds of dollars on Ethereum.

Basically, for now, at least, Artion is much cheaper and faster than OpenSea.

The NFTs of Artion are stored on decentralized web hosting network IPFS.

Artion is open-source, and Cronje revealed that he is expecting people to fork it. He added that he isn’t trying to deal a blow to OpenSea but that he simply likes to start fires. He then added a GIF that reads “It’s not about the money, it’s about sending a message.”

As of now, there are around 50,000 NFTs on Artion, all of them being Fantom NFTs. It includes projects like Fantom Waifus, StrangeBrew, and Ancestral Umans.
