ETH2 Devs Ask the Community to Help Test Out the Merge

Ethereum developers have asked the community to help test the much-anticipated Merge between the Ethereum Mainnet and the PoS based Beacon Chain.

The Merge represents an important milestone for the transition to Ethereum 2.0, with the Ethereum network becoming a PoS one and lowering the level of energy consumption by 99%.

Marius van der Wijden, an Ethereum dev, confirmed on November 29th the release of a new program in which the community would be involved in the Merge testing that focuses on three tiers: non-technical users, developers who have limited experience when it comes to blockchain, and highly tech and experienced blockchain devs.

For non-tech users, the self-guided program offers several duties like taking care of consensus layer clients, reporting failures, and sending transactions.

Technical users have the option to choose objectives like running their own validators, deploying and testing contracts, and creating their own testnets.

Highly technical users have the possibility of reviewing the specs, proposing invalid blocks, and splitting the network by voting on invalid blocks.

The program is asking those who want to get involved to document as much of their work as possible and distribute it online using #TestingTheMerge on Twitter.

Wijden said: “The program is not compensated, but if you find a critical bug (consensus issue/panic), I’ll buy you a beverage of your choice at the next DevCon!”

The Merge with the Beacon Chain is scheduled to be done by Q1 or Q2 2022, at the latest.
