Ethereum’s Berlin Hard Fork Fixed an Issue That Let the Network Exposed to Attacks

The Ethereum Foundation has confirmed that the recent Berlin hard fork has managed to solve an old problem that left the platform at risk of attacks.

This was announced via a blog post. They initially found out about the issue in October 2019 and claim that this was common knowledge for many in the community.

The Ethereum Foundation declared:

“We realized that we would have to do a two-pronged approach to handle these problems. One approach would be to work on the Ethereum protocol, and somehow solve this problem at the protocol layer; preferably without breaking contracts, and preferably without penalizing ‘good’ behavior, yet still managing to prevent attacks. The second approach would be through software engineering, by changing the data models and structures within the clients.”

The foundation commented that it made the reveal now as it tried to promote transparency within the community.

The Berlin hard fork upgrade includes four EIPs that deal with the price of gas and allowing newer types of transactions. The upgrade represents the foundation for the much bigger London hard fork which will activate EIP 1559; this proposal will make changes to the fee problems on the ETH network.
