Hedera Hashgraph Collabs With UK Air Traffic Company to Track Drones

London-based aviation company Neuron Innovation has supervised a drone data collection trial that the UK government has sponsored. The test could be done thanks to a public ledger consensus protocol that Hedera had created.

The collation, storage, and ordering of millions of data points connected to drone flights were possible thanks to Hedera and Neuron working together.

Niall Greenwood, the CEO of Neuron Innovation, stated:

“We have made unmanned, long-distance drone travel possible using safety-critical aviation infrastructure. Each flight creates millions of data points, which no other public ledger has been fast enough to log and correctly order.”

The initial trial took place in Port Montrose, Scotland, almost a year ago, in April 2021, and featured drones that were owned by military, commercial, and government entities meant for long-distance drone flights. A second trial took place in October 2021 at Cranfield University in Bedfordshire.

The sensors created by Neuron managed to record the flight paths of the drone and their location data, while the Hedera consensus helped in creating time-stamps of the data collected from all drones and recording them on a decentralized public ledger.

This is just one in a series of drone-related programs that the UK Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy has supported. The plan is to create a fool-proof process for keeping track and following drones or other aircraft that don’t use crews following their flights not being in view anymore.
