Nike Continues Its Metaverse Expansion by Acquiring NFT Sneaker Studio

Nike confirmed today that it has bought RTFKT Studios, a digital art studio that works with sneaker-themed NFTs and collectibles using the Ethereum blockchain.

John Donahoe, the CEO and President of Nike said:

“We’re acquiring a very talented team of creators with an authentic and connected brand. Our plan is to invest in the RTFKT brand, serve and grow their innovative and creative community and extend Nike’s digital footprint and capabilities.”

This move means that Nike is taking more steps towards a blockchain-based branding and the metaverse.

During the previous month, Nike released NIKELAND in collaboration with Roblox for an immersive 3D world and also submitted four filing requests with the US Patent and Trademark Office in order to trademark virtual goods.

In early December, Adidas has also confirmed it bought a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT for 46 ETH (worth $156,000 at the time).

Chris Le, the co-founder of RTFKT, tweeted:

“When we first started, we had fun designing sneakers inspired by video games and making dope content and always trying to innovate. Nike has always been our inspiration. This is the start of a new chapter in the RTFKT story.”
