Russia’s Hermitage Will Sell Digital Copies of Art Gems as NFTs

One of the most important art collections on the globe, the Hermitage, will start auctioning virtual copies of some of its most important artworks next month, on the Binance NFT marketplace.

Among the masterpieces are “Madonna Litta” by Leonardo da Vinci, “Lilac Bush” by Vincent Van Gogh, “Judith” by Giorgione, “Corner of the Garden at Montgeron” by Claude Monet, and “Composition VI” by Wassily Kandinsky.

This will let the museum “provide better availability of the Hermitage’s collection” and demonstrate “the importance of the digitalization in art collecting.”

All NFTs will be released in two copies, one held by the buyer, and the other by the museum. The metadata of the NFTs will have the signature of Mikhail Piotrovsky, the director of Hermitage, the time of the signing, and the mention that it was signed in the Hermitage.

Piotrovsky declared: “NFT makes the luxury things more available, yet, at the same time, exclusive. On these new technologies, we will base our new experiments.”

Helen Hai, the head of Binance NFT, has commented that this decision by the Hermitage is “priceless” and that it serves as an example for other museums: “Soon, we’ll see more projects developing this union of the blockchain tech and art.”
