Spanish Court Orders Investigation of Possible “Computer Fraud” on Bittrex Exchange as User Loses 1.3 BTC

A Spanish Court has officially issued an order for the country’s police to investigate possible “computer fraud” on the Bittrex crypto platform. The order comes after a filing by a Tenerife-based Bittrex user who claims he lost 1.3 BTC ($58,000) that were stored on said platform.

The user’s problems started when he tried several times to access his funds but with no success. When he finally did manage to enter his account two days later, he reported that “the money had literally disappeared.” He contacted Bittrex who “attributed the theft to the actions of cybercriminals.”

The Spanish Court has said that it wants law enforcement to carry out “a line of technological research that allows the author (of the theft) to be identified.” The court has also asked Bittrex to be a part of the investigation and to prove the necessary insurance policy.

An anonymous “expert” has listed and explained the possible charges that Bittrex may have to face.

“Bittrex allowed four access attempts before the theft, on May 26, 2020, from different IP addresses, with different locations, and with different operating systems, all inconsistent with what was used by the user until that moment and Bittrex did nothing to prevent it.”

The anonymous source also points out that the “events occurred on three different days from France, Granada, Madrid and a town in Minnesota, in the United States.”

The expert also mentioned that the criminal had “allegedly used a different operating system from that of the owner of the account” and that this “should have raised a red security flag for Bittrex.”
