The players from the biggest soccer league in the Netherlands, Eredivisie, will be tokenized on Ethereum. They will become available as NFTs in Sorare, a fantasy soccer game.
Eredivisie Is Advancing Toward the Blockchain
The Eredivisie league, which includes big names, such as Ajax, Feyenoord, and PSV Eindhoven, will be part of the Ethereum-based fantasy soccer game, Sorare. The business development manager at Eredivisie CV, Marc Rondah, declared that:
All of the players will become available as digital collectibles. The game lets you buy and trade player cards in order to create a five-a-side team. The created team can be entered into tournaments, and the prizes that you win are being paid in digital cards and ETH.
Sorare already has contracts with some of the biggest soccer clubs in the world, such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich. Some of the collectibles have grown to value quite a lot – in 2020, a unique card of Paris Saint-Germain forward Kylian Mbappé was sold for the sum of $65,000.
As claimed by a press release from December 2020, the game has generated a total of $1.9 million in card sales alone.
The cards that are available in Sorare represent a form of NFT or non-fungible token. This means that since the tokens can be found on the blockchain, they are rare by default; this also leads to the fact that the cards can’t be replicated for more than one person.
A lot of the hype in recent weeks regarding Ethereum is due to the NFT excitement. Sorare doesn’t just bridge the world of sports with that of the NFT, but it has also expanded into digital art and music.
Since Eredivisie is the highest-ranking league in Dutch soccer and taking into consideration all of the other soccer clubs that have signed with Sorare, it could soon become the leading soccer game on Ethereum.
