Ubisoft Releases Ubisoft Quartz Platform for Playable and Energy-Efficient NFTs

Ubisoft, the French video game publisher, has confirmed it is entering the NFT world through a new platform known as Ubisoft Quartz that will be released in beta this week with Ghost Recon Breakpoint for PC players on Ubisoft Connect.

The official website of the company states that players will be able to get collectible pieces of Ubisoft game worlds known as Digits, which are “the first NFTs playable in AAA games and running on energy-efficient technology.” In-game weapons or vehicles can be digits and they will be available in limited quantities and editions. They will be offered for free to early adopters on December 9th, 12th, and 15th in the US and Canada.

Quartz also has plans to extend to Australia, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The Ubisoft Quartz energy-efficient technology is leveraged on the PoS blockchain Tezos.

The blockchain technical director of Ubisoft, Didier Genevois, stated:

“This type of blockchain achieves the same results while using significantly less energy than proof-of-work protocols. To give you an idea, a transaction on Tezos is equivalent to 30 seconds of video streaming, while on Bitcoin, it is equivalent to watching one year straight of video streaming!”

Baptiste Chardon, the blockchain product director for Ubisoft, also declared:

“This new approach can even, on a longer-term, open up new opportunities such as interoperability between games. […] We see blockchain as a means of placing back into the hands of players and creators the value they generate through their engagement with their games.”

Ubisoft is considered to be one of the top 25 largest gaming companies on the globe by market cap with a value of $5.8 billion.
