Amazon Takes Mexico Into Consideration for a Digital Currency Project

Following the announcement that Tesla bought Bitcoin worth $1.5 billion, the crypto community is looking at all the big companies to see if anybody plans a similar move. Amazon has been described as one of the companies that can alter the way society will perceive crypto trading and crypto transactions.

Many have speculated about this for years now, but it looks like the firm may be slowly coming out to make an actual statement of intent regarding this.

Amazon is still committed to Fiat, but it does plan to experiment a little with digital currencies.

A Digital Project

Based on a recent job posting by the company, Amazon may be getting ready to launch a “digital currency” type-of project in Mexico.

The project has yet to be officially announced, but the job post suggests the giant is looking into ways of offering lucrative Prime customers more payment options on its platform.

One of these solutions is the “Digital and Emerging Payments (DEP),” as it is called in the company’s job post.

“We are looking for a leader to help us launch a new payment product stating with Mexico as our initial launch country,” the job listing mentions.

Amazon also added that the product is supposed to help customers convert cash into digital currencies and that said currencies can then be used to make purchases online or enjoy Amazon services, like Prime Video.

Going Beyond Mexico

What type of digital asset is the company exactly talking about remains a mystery for the time being. Many believe it is very unlikely Amazon would start using already established assets like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The job posting also specifies that the ideal candidate should be familiar with native AWS technologies to design new systems.

The first job posting mentioned that the project would be released in Mexico, but another job post suggests that this new product will be available in more emerging markets.

The rumors about Amazon entering the crypto market go all the way back to 2017 when Amazon bought three domains with names related to crypto: amazoncryptocurrencies.com, amazonethereum.com, and amazoncryptocurrency.com.
