Canada Freezes $20 Million in Bitcoin Donated to Protesters

Canada began clamping down on the crypto sent to the Freedom Convoy’s coffers which protest anti-COVID-19 measurements.

The protest began when several truckers drove to Ottawa from the Canadian west coast to criticize the mandatory COVID-19 vaccination of truck drivers.

The truckers started shutting down bridges and border crossings, which lead to Canada losing over $500,000 in daily trade with its neighbor, the US.

Residents of Ottawa declared themselves to be affected by this protest.

Demonstrators managed to raise about $10 million via a GoFund Me campaign before the platform decided to remove the page. As a result, the protestors turned to bitcoin.

Ottawans have decided to sue for up to $20 million of the total amount that was raised in donations which would be shared between the residents of the city. The government of Canada is now trying to seize the funds of the protestors.

Judge Calum MacLeod of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice signed a Mareva Injunction on Friday, freezing crypto assets at more than 120 different addresses associated with some of the top cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Monero.

Among the digital asset platforms and exchanges that make up the list are Binance SmartChain, PancakeSwap, TallyCoin, BitBuy, and Satoshi Portal.

MacLeod ordered that all crypto exchanges, banks, or websites have to stop all transactions related to the convoy. Those opposing can be fined or serve time in jail.
