The Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, has declared that countries are using dirty energy to mine Bitcoin. He has revealed that 90% of Bitcoin mining is taking place outside of the US and because dirty energy is being used, people tend to see BTC mining as being a dirty activity itself.
Suarez reiterated his wish of turning Miami into a Bitcoin mining hub, mentioning that he’d do it for national security and because Miami has clean energy that would fix the problems of BTC mining.
In an interview from January of this year, Suarez commented that Bitcoin was an attractive investment, mentioning that “If I would have invested in Bitcoin last year, I would have made 300%. So, I would have looked like a genius.”
China Takes the Lead
China is responsible for over 50% of the global hash rate. Some of the biggest BTC mining farms in the world can be found here. China has banned crypto trading and ICOs, but it kept crypto mining legal. However, Bitcoin miners seem to have some challenges either way. Some of them are power crises and uncertainty regarding the regulations. This makes many Chinese crypto miners plan on moving up North for cheaper electricity.
