Unstoppable Domains Joins Polygon to Lower Gas Fees for Ethereum NFT Domains

Unstoppable Domains, a blockchain domain name company, won’t charge customers gas fees anymore for minting an NFT domain name starting today, has confirmed the company. Unstoppable Domains has finished its first phase of moving to Polygon which represents a layer-2 scaling solution for Ethereum that is capable of speeding up transactions and mitigating fees.

Before, Unstoppable Domains used the Zilliqa blockchain before it moved to Ethereum. Now it moved to Polygon which presents itself as “the eco-friendly blockchain scaling Ethereum.”

Gas on the Ethereum network refers to the variable cost of registering any kind of transactions on the network and, if you know a bit about crypto, you know that it can get rather expensive. For example, gas fees needed to mint just one domain name on Unstoppable Domains via Ethereum went as high as $100.

Ethereum is working on its network in order to reduce the gas fees, but it is still unknown when the upgrade would be finished, which is most likely why Unstoppable Domains decided to move to Polygon.

Unlike the usual NFTs that we hear about, which are related to the world of art or sports, and which feature images or short videos, NFT domain names are just web domain names that exist on a blockchain. NFTs represent tokens that can be used to represent ownership of different types of digital items which also include “uncensorable” web domains.

These domains also have another purpose which is to offer short, easy-to-remember crypto wallet addresses, similar to the “.eth” names that are offered by the Ethereum Name Service.

Unstoppable Domains has revealed that over 1.5 million NFT domain names have been created using its service since 2018. It allows you to buy domain names that end in .blockchain, .dao, .crypto., .nft., or .bitcoin, among others.

Since Unstoppable Domains has begun its transition to Polygon, the firm wants to offer support for domain management, but also for transfer solutions in the cases of those who are still using Zilliqa or Ethereum-minted domains.

At the end of November, customers will be able to create domains on Polygon using their crypto addresses and to add several features, such as NFT galleries and social media links. For anybody who wants to move their domains from Polygon to Ethereum, they will be able to do so next year, but Ethereum gas fees will continue to be applied.
